Part 1
Preliminary Practices
These essential practices of Bön originate from the ancient Tibetan Bön Atri teachings of Dzogchen and give an authentic transmission from Teacher to student. These teachings provide an overview of the entire path to full liberation as well as instruction in the essential aspects of Tibetan Bön meditation. Experience has shown that students who approach their practice with genuine patience, trust and perseverance develop steadily and gift themselves the opportunity to gently open to the heart essence of these profound lineage teachings.

Students will be methodically stepped through the foundational practices of Atri Dzogchen that serve to prepare the mind and body to meditate. In order to have the right view of mind and body, we need both to recognise our own motivations and aspirations and cultivate the positive qualities that shift our mind from survival to exploration mode.
These practices serve to ripen the mind and establish the qualities of safety, trust, interest, admiration and motivation. Students will be precisely instructed in methods designed to cultivate the qualities of mind conducive to practise. It is important to point out that “foundational” does not mean “lesser” and that these foundational practices of Dzogchen are a complete practice of the spiritual path that advanced practitioners continue to cultivate.

Part 2
Concentration Practices
The Tibetan Bön model of Dzogchen presented in Part 2 extends on the Preliminary practices presented in Part 1 and introduces students, who have developed the essential aspects of preparing the mind, to concentration or “Staying-calming” meditation. Meditation, in this sense, is not a form of relaxation as it has come to be understood in the west, rather it is a means to explore the full potential of the human mind.

Retreat Section Start: 9:00AM, Monday, 16th Nov, 2026
Retreat Section End: 5:00PM, Tuesday, 17th Nov, 2026
-
Using Part 1 - Preliminaries as the foundation, this section introduces students, who have developed the essential aspects of preparing the mind, to concentration or “staying-calming” meditation. This practice of ‘staying’ or ‘calm-abiding’ forms an essential foundation and when practiced well, develops concentrated evenness and stability of mind; essential qualities in preparation for insight practices.
This section of the retreat offers an essential exploration of the nine stages of staying in Bön. Noting the limited translations of Bön literature, this retreat draws on the translations of Assanga’s Elephant Path as a means of elaborating these fundamental skills. The Elephant Path is a time-tested map of training concentration and deepening insight into the nature of mind used for hundreds of years across various Tibetan teachings. Through progressive training in relaxation, stability and clarity, this retreat will integrate frameworks and practices from Bön Atri Dzogchen and Mahamudra lineages, preparing the practitioner for the stable realisation of natural mind, and advanced yogic practices.

Part 3
Spaciousness Practices
This third and final section of the retreat will focus on cultivating an experience of spaciousness. Spaciousness has a major emphasis in Dzogchen, and if developed properly can easily segue into emptiness and awareness practice. This retreat will explore very practical ways of having a direct experience of spaciousness in several different fields, notably the sense fields (visual field, auditory field, and the bodies somatic field) as well as the mental space around thoughts. Once understood. this practice can shift perception from ordinary perception to pure perception.

Using Part 2 - Concentration as the foundation, this retreat will focus on cultivating an experience of spaciousness.
We will show how spaciousness is an integral part of each of these fields, and how sensory objects like sounds can integrate with the spaciousness and silence that is always right here.
This practice can shift perception from ordinary perception to pure perception.
Once you understand how the sensory fields operates, these principles can be applied to extra-sensory fields such as the field of lovingkindness (Metta), the Lineage Field, the Field of Merit, and Buddha-fields.
The guided meditations will be detailed and specific. You will not be left to struggle wondering what spaciousness is.
Leading into these practices, students are required to have prior experience in Part 1 - Preliminaries and in Part 2 - Concentration.

Additional Information
Lineage & Tradition / Authorisation:
This retreat is rooted and authorised in the A Krid Dzogchen (pronounced “Atri”) Lineage of Tibetan Bön Dzogchen and is a one-thousand-year-old compendium of the middle path to liberation in Bön. This root text is the gateway to a series of expanded texts that refine the skills that ultimately lead to full awareness of mind.
Chapters 1-7 will be covered from the root text: ‘The Pith Instructions for the Stages of the Practice Sessions of the A-Tri (A Khrid) System of Bön Dzogchen Meditation’.
This text is available for purchase here and will be available for pick up at the beginning of the retreat.
As with our other offerings and in keeping with H.H 33rd Menri Trinzin’s wishes, we endeavour to convey these ancient practices & teachings in a way that honours and preserves this great essence tradition and, where appropriate, provide insight into the psychological and physiological changes - from the latest known knowledge in the West - that occur as we develop our minds through these practices. This approach is also in respect to the work of Dr. Daniel P. Brown who worked tirelessly for decades to bridge the Eastern and Western understanding of mind and make these transformative skills accessible without reducing them to anything less than the precious opportunity that they are.
Recommended Retreat Preparation:
In preparation for Part 3 - Spaciousness - these practices require that one is relatively free from distraction whilst meditating on the cushion (Part 2) and has established the foundational practices (Part 1) such that we have a genuine connection with the three jewels of refuge and have experience with the positive qualities of safety, trust, admiration and right motivation for engaging in practice.
It is important to understand that if you have a background of trauma, unfortunately common in most human communities, you should speak with a teacher and explore what practices may be necessary to process these experiences before proceeding further down this path.
You can reach out here to discuss any concerns and questions you may have with an experienced teacher.
Retreat Structure & Conditions of Participation:
Facilitated by Geshe Sonam Gurung and supported by established practitioners, the first and second part will be and in depth introduction and overview of the Atri Bön Preliminary Practices (Part 1) and Concentration Practices (Part 2). As a reminder, for participation in section 3 it is expected that participants have an established foundation in these essential practices of Bön along with any necessary psychotherapeutic work as these foundational practices cultivate the necessary conditions of safety, trust, genuine interest and right motivation for engaging in practice.
These teachings will convey the interplay between effort and effortlessness, balancing stability with natural awareness as one remembers how to rest in a way that is relaxed, stable, clear, and free from grasping. Those with a history of trauma or diagnosed psychiatric conditions should consult with a teacher before engaging in intensive meditation practice. Meditation can bring latent material to the surface and it is essential that practitioners have the appropriate resources and support to navigate such experiences skillfully. If you have any doubts or concerns about your suitability for this retreat, please contact us here to speak with an experienced teacher.
Throughout the retreat, the emphasis will be on experiential practice rather than pure conceptual understanding. Unlike some immersive retreats that are strictly silent, this teaching style will be interspersed with reflective feedback sessions and discussion, allowing students to ground, refine and correct their practice where required. This is a continuation and adaptation of Dan Brown’s Pointing Out instruction whereby students are given clear instructions, have ample opportunity to practice followed by the space to receive feedback and correction where required by a teacher.
