The view, Soul and natural awareness
Buddhist Perspective on Universe Origins
Geshe discussed the origins of the universe from a Buddhist perspective, explaining that unlike Christianity's specific creation story, Buddhist teachings focus on understanding the nature of reality rather than a literal account. He emphasized that different religions share common themes about human struggles with insecurity and the search for meaning, and suggested that religious stories often contain deeper spiritual meanings that should not be taken literally. Geshe concluded that true understanding comes from recognizing one's true nature through meditation and consciousness, rather than adhering to specific religious doctrines.
Dzogchen Boundaries and Mental States
Geshe explained the concept of boundaries in Dzogchen practice, describing how the mind can project both positive and negative energies, and how understanding both secure and unsecure states helps practitioners transcend dualistic thinking. Geshe used the example of mirrors in confined spaces to illustrate how boundaries can create a sense of ease, similar to how positive visualization can counteract negative self-perceptions during meditation practice. The discussion focused on helping practitioners recognize and understand both positive and negative mental states as a path toward non-dualistic awareness.
Bon Tradition Soul Concept Discussion
Geshe discussed the concept of soul in Bon tradition, explaining that while Bon doesn't believe in a permanent soul in the traditional sense, it does recognize energy that can be strengthened or diminished. Geshe compared the relationship between body and mind to a fish in a net, where they become integrated and form energy together. When asked by Dr. Amira if soul is similar to vitality, Geshe confirmed this interpretation. Geshe also addressed Jordan's question about semen retention in yogic traditions, explaining that consciousness and awareness are key factors in preserving energy during sexual activity. Geshe noted that while men and women have different energy channels based on their body structure, both possess the same types of energy.
Natural Awareness and Meditation Resources
Geshe discussed the concept of maintaining natural awareness beyond meditation practice, using metaphors about a single medicine curing hundreds of diseases. When asked about recommended resources, Geshe suggested studying texts like the Gusum Rang Shah, which covers dream yoga, sleep yoga, and other practices. Eyal recommended a book called "Karmamudra - The Yoga of Bliss" by Dr. Nida Chenangtsang as a useful resource, though not specifically from the Bon tradition. The group took a brief break and planned to return for meditation practice.
Sexual-related Practice
Geshe expressed caution about practicing sexuality-related meditation and emphasizing the importance of first developing strong "awakened awareness". Geshe explained that without sufficient practice in maintaining awareness, the powerful "current of lust" could override one's spiritual development, potentially leading to misuse or abuse. Geshe noted the importance of building awareness through daily practice rather than rushing into advanced sexual yoga practices, and suggested that recognizing one's own level of awareness is an ongoing process that develops gradually through meditation and daily life observation.
Guided Meditation Session Meeting
The group then took a 5-minute break before proceeding with a guided meditation session led by Michael. The meditation included instructions on posture, body scanning, breath awareness, and reflections on impermanence, trust, forgiveness, and generosity. The session concluded with a dedication practice, after which participants expressed thanks to Michael.
